Stevia, the Diabetic’s Plant

Stevia VS Sucre 2

A big part of the diabetics (more than 135 million in the entire world) could take advantage of the specificity of the Stevia: to regulate the rate of sugar in the blood.

Indeed in 2002, scientists from Endocrinology and Metabolism of the University Hospital of Aarhus (Denmark) showed after many studies with diabetics that the steviosidose stimulates the Beta cells of the pancreas when it is mixed with glucose, to create its original insulin, which acts as an “anti-hyperglycemic agent” controlling the levels of sugar in the blood, providing a true hope for the patients suffering from type 2 diabetes (those who do not depend upon insulin). Those results confirm Jeppesen’s discoveries dated the year 2000.

The hypoglycemic power of the Stevia over diabetics is particularly showed in Paraguay, where Carlos A. Oviedo and his team noticed in 1970 a reduction of 32.5% of the levels of glucose in the blood of the diabetics  only 6 to 8h after they ate some Stevia leaves.

In Brazil, in the universities of Maringa and Sao Paulo, the influence of the Stevia has been measured through the levels of glucose in the blood of 16 volunteers; 8 in good health, who did not eat Stevia, and 8 predisposed to diabetes, who consumed 5 grams of Stevia leaves every 6 hours, each day during 3 days.

The Stevia leaves have been flooded inside boiled water during 20 minutes before being consumed. Scientists did a test to measure the levels of glucose before and after the consumption of Stevia leaves, to be able to compare the results with those from volunteers who did not consume Stevia. The volunteers predisposed to the diabetes drank a cup of water filled with glucose inside, and then the levels of glucose in the blood have been measured. It is important to notice that before the test began, the volunteers predisposed to diabetes were measured a higher rate of glucose in their blood than the volunteers in good health.

Therefore, the results showed that the sick volunteers who took some Stevia slightly reduced the rate of glucose in their blood, to levels close to the levels of those in good health, which proves that the Stevia is good to diabetics, allowing them to reduce their sugar consumption.

In Paraguay for example, doctors prescribe the Stevia tea as a treatment to diabetes, as in Brazil, where Stevia capsules and Stevia tea officially approved to struggle against diabetes. Obvious, when you know that Stevia naturally contains nutriments that help the body to regulate the glucose in the blood.

Physical activity has a huge influence over health and well-being. It is tremendously beneficial for the diabetics.

It does not matter if you are diabetic or not, exercise is very important: it will strengthen your heart, your muscles and your bones, improve your blood circulation, and allow you to control your weight. Staying active will allow you to feel good, healthy and happy: your body will work more efficiently, because doing sport increases your levels of endorphins and serotonin, two chemical substances in your brain which influence your behavior and your well-being. In concrete terms, it means that someone who tends to be depressed should practice sport daily to reduce those tendencies, or even eradicate them.

For the diabetics, only 30 minutes of practice 5 times a week helps regulate the glucose levels in the blood, and weaken the risk to deal with complications, like heart diseases for example. No matter if you distribute those 30 minutes all along the day 5 times a week, or only 3 times a week but practicing during 1h: you can do as you wish.

If you suffer from type 2 diabetes, practicing sport daily will help you reduce the opposition to insulin, which will allow it to be more effective more rapidly: you will consume insulin less often.

If you suffer from type 1 diabetes, keep practice sport and you will be able to reduce your insulin consumption.

Few convenient advices

  • Walk or use a bike for short journey instead of pick up your car
  • Get off the bus few stops before your final destination, and walk to it
  • Go upstairs or downstairs instead of just use the elevator or the escalator

In several European countries, a third of the population is overweight. Despite, people is aware about their problem.

When a man is 1m80 for 100 kg, and when a woman is 1m66 for 77 kg, they are both obese. The situation is alarming: in less than 20 years, the obesity rate for adult men went from 6% to 13%, when it went from 8% to 16% for adult women.

We talk about obesity when the Body Mass Index, the BMI, is superior or equal to 30. We talk about overweight when the BMI is between 25 and 29.9. The BMI of someone in good health is between 18.5 and 24.9. To calculate your BMI, you just have to divide your weight with the square of your height, being: kg/m2.

According to the doctor   Andrew Prentice, from the Medical Research Center located in the United Kingdom, “obese people take important risks with their health: arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol rate, colon cancer, or breast cancer.

Experts are unanimous: obesity consume from 3 to 8% of the complete outlays in the health industry, which represents the same amount of outlaws dedicated to struggle against AIDS or cancer.

Sometimes, the genetic code play a fundamental role in the obesity factors, but it is observed that 7 men over 10 and 8 women over 10 do not practice any physical activity. Actually, the European diet is made up energetic and fat food which, coupled with a more and more settled lifestyle, favors obesity. More, there is an important imbalance between the amount of energy created and the amount ingested. And things get worse: indeed, obesity is also a problem for the children and the teenagers. As obese people tend to eat fat food, get rid of it is difficult.

And yet, pretty astonishing fact, the consumption of fat products tends to lower, showing the consumption of fat food is not the only reason of this “obesity epidemic”. According to the experts, our settled lifestyle is a problem, and if physical activity is not enough to eradicate obesity, it helps the oxidation of the fat, a process which is not naturally done when you suffer from obesity.

It is compulsory to mix physical activity and diet, which would be “a good start to eradicate obesity”, doctor Prentice says.

Overweight and obesity are closely linked to many serious diseases. At the age of 50, all the people who suffer from obesity have a heart condition, or become diabetic. They also threatened to suffer from arterial hypertension, hepatobiliary infections, thrombosis, embolism, arteriosclerosis, renal diseases, or osteoarticular infections.

According to a Peruvian survey led by the Demografic and Health Survey, the average for the overweight and the obesity in the children aged less than 5 was, respectively, 25% and 19%, with predominance in the districts of Tacna (57%), Moquegua (42%), and Lima (41%). The most concerned are the children aged from 48 to 59 months, extremely poor, and living in the urban zones.

In Tumbes y Ucayali, the obesity number reaches 50%. The increase of the rate of child obesity is due to several variables: the age of the child, the place where he lives now, the place where he is born, and the level of instruction of his mother.

All this data has to be used in order to help the children eat better and more safely.

Stevia et Café 2

All the studies say the same: the Stevia is a strong ally in the struggle against obesity. Indeed, it contains very few calories, and reduces the sensation of hunger. More, the plant accentuates the feeling of fullness.

During the 6th Congress of Pharmacology, which took place in Buenos Aires in 1976, the “Investigation Center of the Stevia” showed its work: a demonstration of the effects of the Stevia against the obesity.

The same year, Nilsa Noemi Ibarrola Arce, an expert in endocrinology, explains that the daily use of Stevia tea reduces the absorption of carbohydrates in the area of the intestine, acting like a kind of “slimming agent”.

In China, Stevia tea is recommended to lose weight and to ease the digestion.

In Japan, the Stevia is a substitute to the sugar, as it is recommended in the struggle against diabetes and obesity. More, the steviosidose replaces synthetic sweeteners as aspartame for example, which have been identified as carcinogenic.

In Singapore, it is a truly “nutritional system” that has been settled, which allows the Stevia, mixed with healthy food and beverage, to reduce little by little the population of students suffering from obesity.

To reduce the diabetes and the child obesity, the World Health Organization, the WHO, recommends the Stevia, which will be able to reduce the number of calories ingested, to favor the loss of weight and the regulation of the glucose in the blood.
